There are two major types of birth injuries that can occur to infants during the birthing process: injuries from trauma and injuries from lack of oxygen to the brain. A lack of oxygen to the brain is known as hypoxia or asphyxia. Birth asphyxia or birth hypoxia can be minor to severe, depending on the amount of oxygen that was deprived from the brain, the length of time the brain was deprived of the oxygen, what preventative actions were taken by the medical staff, and the amount of damage that was caused to the brain.


Birth hypoxia or asphyxia must be recognized and treated right away. • weak breathing or no breathing from the infant
